Default The World Cup Thread(For Those Who Like FOOTBALL)

Upon logging onto guru today, I was pleased to see that a few threads had been started regarding the World Cup which, as you must know, began today. However, It didn't take long to realise that football lovers on this forum are a minority group- most of posts were of the of the ''sawcur is teh sux, pie/moa birds/gwen/randomly generated, delightfully irrelevent object is way better!!1'' variety. And so I have set up this football appreciation thread, where Guild Wars players can talk about the World Cup- who do you want to win, do you have any bets on, what teams/players have you been most impressed by etc.

Please let there be others like me out there..

Yay a good forum thread on soccer!

I myself am from germany (living in the US now) but i've always enjoyed soccer. I thought it was awesome that germany was hosting the world cup this year, and was amused by which beer was the official sponsor (budweiser btw)

Like i said in the other thread, I hope germany takes it home, they've been good at soccer since the first day watched them play.

A lot of people have been saying how England is going to win. I am not seeing it. They have too many injuries. Hopefully the US will have a good showing again, but that all depends since they are in a tough group. I am seeing Brazil winning it again. They have 2 players in their last World Cup (Carlos and someone else) so they will be determined to win it. They also have the best talent. I see Brazil taking it.

I have to say, I am not really into football too much, and the only time I ever watch it is when England are playing for one of those cups. I'm not bothered at all who wins it, but it would be nice to see England win since they are the joint 2nd favourites.

Well Englands world rank is 10 i think. (correct me if i am wrong) Anyways yes they are a joint favorite for some reason. They do have two of their good players injured though. That should hurt them yet people still think they will pull through. Germany does look strong this year as usual. They will defiently get into the Semis if not all the way to the Final. I am still seeing Brazils star packed lineup winning it all though.

I like soccer (or football) but I really hate 0-0 games. Seriously, you watched a bunch of guys running after a ball in their underwear for over 90 minutes for nothing.

Also, I really hate how some the players make a big deal of everything, like those hobos who grab their legs and pretend to be in a lot of pain after a casual tackle, probably to get the ref to card the guy.

Pretty good opening game.
I really wanna see a blowout game, I mean like 10-0 or something.

I think England might have a shot at winning it, though Beckham is a prick and deserves to get slapped.

Don't mind the world rankings, they really do seem to be completely random: Czech Republic the second best team in the world? England big themselves up every year, only to be knocked out in the quarters or last 16; then blame the manager for their inadequate team -so don't mind them.
Since i have 300 euro riding on Brazil due to my good luck at the pool in work, I'm goin to have to shout for them- but otherwise it'd be one of the underdogs ,ie. Togo or Angola.

Yes, I also have realized that the World Rankings are crap. I think that the Czechs are overrated and that England is in fact underrated. I think that this will actually help them a bit as some teams might come in overconfident due to its diminished World Rank. England is a amazing team, with or without some of the key players. As most people say, Beckham carries the team. That is a lie. I so far have never seen one person (since maybe Pele, but even he had some great teammates) that carried a team as far as England has gone. England will put up a fight and more then likely make it easily into the Semis. Argentina seems to have slipped through most peoples sights. They are dangerous as well, but no one focuses on them, look for them to upset some of the more heavily favored teams.

EDITED: Let the mods take care of flamers.

Poland lost to Ecuador, 2-0. I am not sure if i should be shocked or if i should realize that in the back of my mind i knew they were going to lose. Poland looks like they are going to choke again.

It said in the paper that they were joint second favourites, but meh.

For some reason I can see Brazil losing in the knockout rounds, and Germany will play England in the final

After watching the Germany game I dont think they have what it takes to win the cup this year, but it all depends if all the other teams 'turn up' or not.

Their defence against a lone striker was woeful. For all the goals they scored, it looked as if their attack lacked both quality and penetration. Against stronger backlines I think they might struggle, pace, accuracy, one touch passing and creativity all seemed to be lacking, but determination and power was definatly there. Not sure if it will be enough.

England have a great chance this year, unless they get into a tricky position and it requires some manager inspiration to get them out, then they are doomed.

Their team is strong though, and on paper they have one of the strongest defences and midfields in the tournament, and with Rooney back one of the strongest attacks.

They get overhyped, but the level of competition in England in recent years, as well as the high level European compeition the core england players are used to now, they have to have a really strong chance.

Brazil though, must be the favourites. Ronaldo is carrying some weight, but their team is scary.
I want to see the Argentina game badly, because some people seem to think they have a good chance this year, but im not convinced.

Its here!!! \o/

And wow, two absolutely stunning goals already. That Lham guy, right into the top corner, smack right in off the angle, what a goal.

germany played such sloppy defence, nice opening game though lots of goals... Doubt they are going to win (though teams that host seem to do very well, like France and Korea).
Most teams claim that one of their bigdogs is injured, though i dont think its true half the time.
And there are more than 2 returning players on the brazilian team.
As for who im for this world cup, i used to be for Argentina and Italy but they have been letting me down 2much these last couple of world cups.
Would be funny if Iran or Saudi Arabia won!

Haha yeah, at one point I thought they were going to put Rooney on they had so little going up front. Fergie would have been happy....

Downing looked ok, and Joe Cole looked really bright upfront. A bit loose in his defence though, lots of dodgy backpasses lol.

Apart from the midfield in the first half, again they seemed to have very little threat going forward.

Those Paraguyans had some nice forwards though, that substitute attacker looked really bright, I forget his name.

Anyway Sweden V T&T, watch Larsson he is class. 3-0 to Sweden, Larsson to get atleast one.

Larsson is my hero, played in Scotland and was king, then singlehandedly beat Arsenal in the champs league final, w000000000t.

Brazil has two guys playing in their LAST World Cup. Not two guys returning from their last World Cup victory. (Pretty much their whole team)

I am interested in the US vs. Czechs game. The Czechs are ranked number 2 in the world, but i dont think they are that good. It should be interesting to see how the US does due to the fact that normally it doesnt make it to the next round. Donavon and Beasley need to step it up and so does the defense if they hope to get past the Czechs.
